Why I’m not giving up anything in January

Why I’m not giving up anything in January

January is the start of a brand new year and the time when a lot of us make new years resolutions. New year, new me and all that jazz. If I’m honest I’ve been that person, I’ve promised myself I’ll give up chocolate, deprive myself, give up alcohol for January the list is endless isn’t it. But in all honesty it is a slippery slope and a feeling of guilt I know I’ve experienced myself. Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves at this time of year or feel like we should give something up only to feel guilt slide in when we don’t keep up with such strict expectations. I’m not going lie, I do want to start the year as I mean to go on and for me that is filling my body with the good stuff and begin excersing more.

The start of the year does excite me, the brand new year is a good a time as any to think about all we wish to accomplish in the upcoming months. I feel all our focus shouldn’t be on all we need to give up, and we most definitely shouldn’t feel we have to give up things up in order to succeed. Instead I believe we should think about how and what we can add to our lives in order to improve and reach our goals.

Instead of thinking about all the things I want to give up I have chosen a word to help me with my focus for this year. My word is Grow.

Grow as a person

Grow my confidence

Grow my knowledge

Grow my blog/ website

Grow my following

Nothing about grow suggests depriving myself of anything, or removing anything from life. Grow to me is all about natural development and increasing existance and becoming as a person and for this I’m super excited.

Having said that, I’m not saying how you choose to set your goals is wrong I just know for me promising myself I am going to give up X, Y Z in the past has not ended well.

Have you ever thought about setting yourself a word for the year, season or even month by month? It could really help you gain focus with your own personnal growth and goal setting.

I’d love for you to share your new years resolutions, plans and goals and how you plan to reach those goals. Please share your word for 2019 too if you chose one and let us all know what you are focusing on this year.

Until next time

I fee the complete opposite. It’s strange what a few number can do to you. I feel positive and full of inspiration. I love how you see the new year too and I wish nothing but the best for you and your blog, life and work!

Thankyou Kelly-anne , yes however we choose to succeed is our own personnel choice and what works for one may not work for the next person. Good luck in succeeding in your goals I’m sure you’ll smash them xx

Love this! I totally agree that depriving yourself isn’t helpful. I really like your choice of word of the year. I chose a saying since I couldn’t decide on a word – strive for progress not perfection

I always focus on what I want to do rather than what I don’t want to do, seems a much better mind set!

What a great way to look at it, all too often people fail because they put too much pressure on themselves bought on by the turn of the year.

Totally agree! I think it’s silly to put pressure on ourselves. Making sweeping statements about what we are going to do or give up is not helpful for most people. However, as you say I do think specific and realistic goals are fantastic and new year is a great time to set them. I have a word which pulls my goals together, it’s ‘purpose’. I want to be more purposeful about everything I do and prioritise what is and isn’t important better. The key for me is to be realistic in the goals that I set so that that I can focus on each one better. I’ve put together a plan to help me do this. I think a plan beats a resolution! x
