Book review – After The End by Clare Mackintosh

This is not the first Clare Mackintosh book I’ve read, or in this case listened too. You may remember books like I Let You Go and I See You. Definitely some of my favourites. After The End is a very different style of book for Clare and is most definitely not a crime-thriller, But when Tandem collective asked me to take part in the listenalong with some other lovely ladies over on Instagram I jumped at the chance.

Max and Pip are the strongest couple you know. Only they are facing the most important decision of their lives – and they don’t agree. Their son is diagnosed with a brain tumour and the doctors put the fate of their son in their hands.
With the consequences of an impossible choice threatening to devastate them both, nothing will ever be the same again.

What can I say… This book will not disappoint, leaving you longing to listen at every spare second. The emotion of the story will get you from the very first page. Clares ability to describe the emotions of everyone involved, Pip, Max and Layla Dylan Doctor. Getting the perspective of each character especially Laya, Dylan Doctor added an extra dimention to the story, and the split narrative allows us to see the story unfold for each possibility.

I’ve included a copy of the prompt cards below to use if you wish

Even though this is a very different to Clares usual style of book, Clare wrote this so perfectly. Her own personal experience and heart break was what inspired her to write the book. In 2006 Clare and her husband had to make the devasting decision to turn off their sons life support.

This book tells the story of what happens after the unthinkable.

A wonderful book that has left me with so much emotion long after I finished listening. I cannot recommend it enough. If you have also read or listened to the book I’d love to hear your thoughts.
